Mother and Children Support Policy to Reduce Abortion Rate: A Comparative Study

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to make suggestions which can reduce abortion in Korea, through comparisons with and analyses the present preventive program of abortion. It focuses on mother and children support policy to reduce abortion rate and make a social support infrastructure.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted. In order to accomplish this goal, the mother and children policies in Korea is compared with the five countries in several categories of the purpose, the orientation, the standard, and the procedure. For each category, the similarities and the differences are presented.

Results: Abortion is method that society uses to control its population. As medical abortion becomes safe and reliable, many countries adopted it for population control. In Korea, while abortion remains illegal except limited medical and ethical conditions, Korea is still among the nations with highest abortion rate.

Conclusions : There is proposal to reduce abortion rate through strict application of criminal liability. A social welfare policies adopted in other countries were introduced, and possibility of adopting policies was discussed.
